Biology & Biomedical Sciences 4+1 Programs

If you’re a biological sciences or biomedical sciences major with 80 credit hours or more, our 4+1 program offers you a faster, more affordable path to an advanced degree.

The 4+1 program allows you to earn a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degree in only five years. Students who are eligible for the program must apply no later than the second semester of their junior year of undergraduate study. You must meet the graduate school’s standard admissions requirements and be conditionally accepted to the 4+1 program before your bachelor’s degree is awarded to be eligible to attend the fifth year of the program.

Once accepted into the 4+1 program, you will be assigned a second academic counselor to guide you through the graduate school component of the program. As with all other academic programs at MSU, you’ll get the personal, one-on-one attention you need to succeed both in and out of the classroom.

Program Requirements

To be eligible for the program, students must:

  • Have a minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.25
  • Earn a “B” or better in all upper-level courses
  • Must earn a “B” or better in all classes that count toward both degrees
  • Must maintain a cumulative undergraduate GPA of at least 3.25 [for both the B.S. Biological Sciences and B.S. Biomedical Sciences degree programs] and a graduate GPA of at least 3.0 to continue in the 4+1 program. Those who do not maintain the required minimum GPA will be expelled from the program. However, all graduate-level classes taken will still count toward the bachelor's degree and students can still apply to enter the traditional graduate program.
  • Be unconditionally accepted to graduate school after completion of a bachelor’s degree
  • Minimum combined GRE verbal and quantitative score of 286

The following graduate classes will count toward a master's degree in the 4+1 program:
