MSU FOUNDATION & OTHER SCHOLARSHIPS

In addition to institutional scholarships, you can apply for scholarships managed by the MSU Foundation. Some are awarded to students in specific majors. Others are open to everyone.

The scholarships below may require additional application processes or have a different application process.

The Art Leadership Scholarship is offered to entering freshman art majors. Applicants must submit a portfolio of work to be reviewed at the annual High School Art Day event.

Required Application Portfolio

  • Portfolio of 8 to 10 art pieces completed within the last two years (include examples of more than one medium; Digital portfolios must include a list of artworks and media)
  • Two Letters of recommendation, one of which should be from an art teacher or other teacher familiar with your work
  • Written statement of your reasons for wanting to major in art at MSU (attach to application)
  • High school transcript
  • Completed application form

Applicants must bring their portfolio, completed application and required materials to High School Art Day at Claypool-Young Art Building. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

The W. Paul and Lucille Caudill Little Scholarship for Study of the Arts at Morehead State University is offered to freshman or transfer students with less than 24 total semester hours who are legal residents of Kentucky (Rowan and Elliott counties receive priority, Fayette county is given second priority) and who demonstrate outstanding talent and ability through portfolio review. Applicants must be admitted to MSU with a GPA of 3.0 or higher and a minimum ACT composite score of 22 or higher (or a New SAT combined score of 1530 or higher).

Recipients must enter work annually in the Mt. Sterling Juried Exhibition and INSCAPE Art Contest. Recipients will also be expected to be active in one of the following: Visual Art Guild, Ceramics Guild, NAEA Student Chapter or AIGA Student Chapter.

The Major Wayne D. Isham Award for ROTC Excellence is awarded to top freshman and sophomore candidates in the MSU ROTC program as determined by GPA and Army Physical Fitness Test scores.

The ROTC Campus-Based Scholarship is offered to full-time undergraduate and graduate students (2-4 years remaining to complete degree) who maintain a GPA of 2.5 or higher and meet the qualifications to commission as an Officer in the U.S. Army.

The ROTC High School Nursing Scholarship is offered to nursing majors with an ACT score of 19 or higher and who maintain a GPA of 2.5 or higher.

The ROTC Nursing Scholarship is offered to students who have applied to and/or been accepted into the BSN Program with a GPA of 2.5 or higher and who meet the qualifications to commission as an Officer in the U.S. Army.

The A. Frank and Bethel C. Gallaher Memorial Music Award provides music competition awards to full-time junior students. Candidates must be nominated to audition by an applied instructor.

The Theodore Presser Scholarship Award is available annually to a junior or senior outstanding music major. The faculty must nominate the recipient. The recipient is named MSU's undergraduate Presser Scholar. Applicants must also complete the online scholarship application.

Recipients are strongly encouraged to participate annually in the Southeastern Theatre Conference.

Requirements

  • Open to qualified students with any type of disability with unmet financial needs as determined by the University’s Office of Financial Aid.
  • Applicants need to have completed twenty-four semester hours at MSU and have earned at least a cumulative 2.80 GPA using only MSU credits.
  • Letters of recommendation and a personal essay are among the materials considered by the Award Committee.
  • Complete the application.

Amount

A competitive scholarship of up to $500 is awarded in spring semesters to one or more full-time students registered with the MSU Disability Services office.

Each year Big Sandy Area Community Action Program (BSACAP) distributes over $7,000 in scholarships to students in the Floyd, Johnson, Martin, Magoffin, and Pike County areas. The nonprofit organization will offer ten $500 academic scholarships and one $2,000 Eula Hall Community Advocate Scholarship. Scholarships are funded through the Community Service Block Grant.

There are scholarships available for students who are going to study abroad.

Scholarships for any freshman, with preference given to a male who has been admitted to MSU, with preference given to applicants who show the best overall aptitude in the areas that Sigma Phi Epsilon holds in high regard: leadership, scholastics, community service and extracurricular activities. Recipients shall possess a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 upon graduation from high school.

This scholarship is possible thanks to the graduating seniors who participated in the senior class giving campaign by making a gift. Thank you to our student donors for making this award possible! 

To be considered, applicants meet the following criteria:

  • Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5
  • Have completed a Bachelor’s degree at Morehead State University, conferred in the Fall or Spring preceding the application deadline.

Graduating Class Scholarship Application

The International Student Scholarship is available to international undergraduate students. Undergraduate applicants must be incoming freshmen or new transfer students with less than 24 total semester hours, with a minimum Admission Index score of 450; and a minimum composite ACT score of 20 or SAT combined score of 1020 or higher; OR be a transfer student with a cumulative college GPA of 3.0 or higher on at least 24 semester hours.

Recipients must maintain a GPA of 2.0 or higher for renewal of the scholarships. This scholarship cannot be combined with the non-resident tuition scholarship. This scholarship cannot be used to cover the cost of internet classes.

This scholarship memorializes the founding members of the Morehead Optimist Club, Inc., whose main objective is to benefit the community's youth. Only graduating seniors who are residents of Rowan County are eligible.

The Morehead Woman's Club Scholarship is available to full-time female graduates of Rowan County Senior High School.

The Mountain Telephone Scholarship is available to incoming freshman students whose parents or guardians are members of Mountain Telephone. Scholarships are renewable for three years if the criteria are met. Recipients will be evaluated each semester for academic progress.

The criteria for selection will emphasize character, leadership, work ethic, potential and financial need.

Certain relatives of the Board of Trustees, their spouses, the employees of Mountain Telephone, and their spouses are restricted from applying for this scholarship. The restricted relatives are children, step-children, grandchildren, parents, and siblings.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • U.S. citizen
  • The parent/guardian must be a current member of Mountain Telephone.
  • Incoming freshman (preference given to those whose primary residence is within the Mountain Telephone service area and will graduate from a public, charter, private or home school within the service area)
  • Cumulative GPA of 2.00 or higher (preference given to GPA of 2.50 - 3.50)
  • Complete the FAFSA
  • Admitted to MSU

AMOUNT

$3,000 annually, renewable as long as academic requirements are met for a total commitment of $12,000.
